SUMMARY:Gentleman from the Cane
DESCRIPTION:The Gentleman from the Cane was first produced in 1976 to celebrate the U.S. Bicentennial. Written by local educator and dramatist Dolly B. Leighton\, this musical drama portrays the years 1818 1822\, when David Crockett resided in Lawrence County. Every character and event in the production is drawn from county historical records and Crockett's autobiography\, interwoven with the music\, folklore\, and daily life of the period. As a representative to the State Legislature\, Crockett earned the nickname "the gentleman from the cane." Following the loss of his mill and distillery due to flooding\, he relocated to West Tennessee. Originally staged along the banks of Shoal Creek in David Crockett State Park\, the production went on to inaugurate the park's amphitheater in 1981\, drawing over 6\,000 attendees during its two-week run. Now\, in celebration of its 50th Anniversary and as part of the commemoration of America's 250th anniversary\, The Gentleman from the Cane returns to the stage at the historic Crockett Theatre. Performances will be held July 6\, 7\, 9\, 10\, 11\, and 12 at 7:00 PM\, with a special 2:00 PM Sunday matinee on July 12. This production continues a cherished community tradition\, featuring a cast of local volunteer performers and honoring the rich heritage and history of Lawrence County. This project is funded under an agreement with the State of Tennessee administered by the Tennessee Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial. *Ticket information coming soon!
